Chapter 19

Overcome by exhaustion, a shakiness in his limbs from the waning adrenaline, Tennant hoped he could remain standing long enough to explain what had happened in the warehouse.

When he saw three unmarked cruisers, their lights flashing, he wondered if he would have a job after all this.

Why only three? What the hell kind of response was that for Sarah Roberts, a woman every cop in the province was looking for.

Getting that warrant signed for those containers only to come up empty-handed had been a blow to his name, but not his career. So, then why were there only three cruisers when he called for backup? What could possibly be the reasoning behind that?

Inspector David Withers jumped out of the lead cruiser before it came to a full stop, his service revolver already in his hand.

“We came as soon as we heard. You okay?” Withers paused, stared at Tennant’s face, then holstered his weapon and moved closer, leaning in to examine Tennant’s face in the headlights of the cruiser. “What the fuck happened to you?”

“Bad day at the office.”

More car doors opened, more officers moving closer.

Several of them exclaimed, groaned, and one mumbled something under his breath when they took in Tennant’s face.

“I was promised dozens of men,” Tennant said. “Where’s the rest of the backup? Where’s the ETF? K-9 units?”

Withers was shaking his head, still staring at Tennant. “Someone did a number on you.”

Tennant glared back at Withers, then several notions hit him at once. It came to him how he could help Sarah after she helped him. And he also thought about the words Marsdale had told Sarah while he was advancing on them.

Marsdale had said something like, I have a couple of guys on the drug squad who are paid well. They call me if that asshole cop who tried to search my containers this morning plans something, but he isn’t because he’s unconscious at the dojo, or something like that.

Rogue officers on the drug squad? Men he worked with? Was that possible? Could Withers be a paid informant? Was he part of Marsdale’s crew? Or was it Johnson? Maybe Diego?

Tennant shook his head at the notion. If Marsdale was telling the truth, it couldn’t be any of Tennant’s crew, his close guys. Marsdale was their target, their big fish. Who amongst them would take a payoff? It would have to sizable enough to make them betray their brothers in blue. Although, Marsdale did have that kind of money. The keyword was had that kind of money. Thanks to Sarah, the man was hurting at the moment.

The least he could do was help Sarah now.

“My informant, someone I’ve been working with for some time, has come through for me.”

Withers frowned, then stepped back. “Who have you been working with?”

“Roberts, of course. How else would I be able to go after Marsdale without someone of her caliber?”

Tennant pulled out the phone Sarah had given him, brought up the picture of the container, and held the phone aloft. Withers,
